The tie of the round.

In one of the most anticipated UWCL ties of the season, Chelsea and Barcelona once again butt heads.

The Catalonian giants trounced Chelsea in the 2021 Final to lift the trophy in Stockholm. However, the Blues will be eager for revenge on the way to lifting that final elusive piece of silverware.

The Tie also has the added intrigue of the potential returns of Pernille Harder and Alexia Putellas: two of the greatest players in the world.

🥊 How did we get here?

  • Both sides topped their groups in style, claiming impressive victories over Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain respectively.
  • Barcelona eased past AS Roma at Camp Nou after a tense 1st leg in Rome, eventually winning 6-1 on aggregate
  • Chelsea meanwhile overcame holders Lyon in one of the most dramatic 2nd legs ever, triumphing on penalties

Key Matchup

Erin Cuthbert vs Aitana Bonmati

📌 The Story

  • Erin Cuthbert has established himself as one of the most dynamic and energetic midfielders in the world.
  • She’ll have her hands full against the metronomic Aitana Bonmati, who has emerged as the key player for Barcelona in Putellas’ absence.
  • Both players offer real thrust in the midfield as well as offensive qualities. Bonmati has a hugely impressive 11-goal contribution already in the competition.
  • If either player can seize control of the midfield, their side will have a good chance of setting the tempo of the tie.

Arsenal vs VFL Wolfsburg

Sunday 23 April 9:30 a.m. ET / 14:30 p.m. GMT

An intriguing tie between two sides that have arguably flattered to deceive this season. Either of them will fancy making it to Eindhoven for May’s showpiece.

Arsenal will be seeking revenge on Wolfsburg after being dumped out the competition last year.

Meanwhile, the Greens will be hoping that 2023 is finally the year they shake off the ‘so close yet so far’ tag of recent years.

🥊 How did we get here?

Key Matchup

Rafaelle Souza vs Jule Brand

📌 The Story

  • In the absence of Alex Popp, Jule Brand will likely lead the line for Wolfsburg in London.
  • Although she has had limited UWCL action so far this season, she does possess blistering pace and a keen eye for goal.
  • Rafaelle de Souza has formed a formidable defensive partnership with Leah Williamson, but she will need to step up in her partner’s absence.
  • If Rafaelle can keep Brand quiet, Wolfsburg will lose a huge attacking outlet. However, if the German gets the better of her, it could be a long afternoon for Jonas Eidevall’s side.
